Why do you drive a Cube? It's a question I hear a lot. Like, so much that I want to punch the next person who asks. Another equally asked question is "Oh is that the new xB?" But that's another story. This story is why I chose a Cube over the car I really wanted (a Mazda 2). Note: This isn't me justifying my purchase to anyone, even if it may read that way.
When I was 17, Scion was in full swing with a huge community that they backed 100%. There were constant car shows that Scion themselves held, including camp outs at drag strips and Owners Days at dealerships. I loved it. I loved it enough to have my first car be a Scion so that way I could partake in the activities. This was when the 1st gen xB was still on sale. I found me a fairly cheap 04 model Scion xB. It needed some help on the exterior but I was going to modify it anyway so that hardly phased me. I worked a very poor paying job at a library (15 hour work week for minimum wage) and saved every penny. I got some parts as hand-me-downs. My father also had a gen1 xB which he totaled shortly before I got mine. He took the wheels and spoiler off to give to me. My brother in law ALSO had a gen1 xB which had been lowered on springs, but when he upgraded to coils, I got the springs (less than 5k miles on them). I bought some LED taillights for it. I loved the damn thing. I was building my own show car.
I had been saving all of my money to get the car repainted completely when the absolute worst thing could have happened happened. Late at night, someone sideswiped my car and kept going. I don't have any pics of the damage anymore but it was catastrophic. I needed a new door, ANOTHER new fender (I already bought 2 as the car originally came with creased fenders) and a new side skirt. Plus the whole paint thing. Insurance gave me 1000 bucks to fix everything. That'd cover the paint maybe but not the replacement parts. My parents gave me the option of getting rid of it, which I took. It was a build I never finished and always regretted not finishing in the back of my mind.
Fast forward 6 years and I was on the hunt for a new car again, I'm at a Mitsubishi dealer looking at a CRZ when I see them. Two Nissan Cubes. My desire to finish that boxy show car came forth and I went to look. One was brown and a base model. One was white and a mid level trim with some options. The brown had a tan interior and nothing else. The white had a black interior and a backup camera and alloy wheels. We took it for a test drive. Sitting inside, it was like a tardis. It was like my first car. Except more modern. I loved it. I bought it. Within 2 weeks, the wheels that were on my Scion were back on this new Cube. Then I bought a front lip. And a spoiler. The showtoaster build can finally continue, except this time I won't stop till it's done.
That's why I chose a Cube, because I wanted to finish modifying a car that I loved dearly.

I used to sell these and I always enjoyed them. Not fast or sporty, no, but really cool in their own right. I love the interior styling and the sheer amount of passenger space is mind-boggling. Cargo space is respectable and can be improved with sliding rear bench seat, even if it doesn't fold perfectly flat. And that side-opening rear door is just fucking awesome. Also, insanely tight turning circle- like, 'defies reality' tight.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

When I was a freshman in college I once rode in a Cube with four other people and a recliner in the back. Truly impressive amount of space (although some of the seating positions may have been less than legal). Neat little cars, and I love your build. Keep posting pictures!

Gonna get the rest of the lip kit to match the front piece, lowered on springs, exhaust (dunno if I want cat-back or axle-back yet), slotted rotors when the time to change those comes, painted brake calipers when my new wheels go on (+20 bhp, yo), maybe some stiffer sway bars. I was contemplating a carbon fiber hood but that might be TOOOO much. A member of a Cube enthusiast group is trying to get some company to produce eyelids for a group buy, so some dang eyelids. Maybe another grille too.

This kind of raises more questions than it answers. If you asked me to name affordable new-car platforms that would be good for a mild build, the Cube probably wouldn't even make the list. Also, if you're in to the whole scene thing, there are dozens of make/model followings that are larger and more active than the Cube faithful. Finally, if you wanted an xB, why not save yourself a few grand and get yourself a minty used xB? It's not like buying a 6-year-old xB is going to turn into a maintenance nightmare.
I tried to phrase this without sounding like a dick, but I wasn't quite successful. I'm not trying to be a dick. I'm genuinely curious.

After a few years of growing post-Scion, I kinda grew out of the scene thing. I tried it again with my Volvos but I learned why the scene was more of a negative influence, so this time I'm building my Cube for me and no one else. When I post pics of it online, I'm not looking for peoples approval, I just like to show off my latest mod and kind of keep track of my progress with it. As for why I didn't get another xB? I just won't buy the same car twice. I may buy the same type of car, but never the exact same car. I like to learn how different cars behave and how different mods affect them. My father owns a current model xB and I can safely say that I hate everything about it, which is why I didn't even consider one of those.

Still seems weird man. Obviously you're pretty in to your cars. Seems like if you were going to mix it up and do something just for you, you'd treat yourself to something a bit more sporty.
This coming from a guy who's purchased four e39s and probably seven or eight Chevy trucks. I think we can chalk this one up to across-the-board philosophical differences.

Probably, I've never owned anything sporty (xB, Colorado, Lancer GTS, Dakota,v40, XC70, Cube). Mostly practical cars. The only sporty car I want is still too expensive for me (a BRZ), plus I'd like to wait a few years till my insurance rates would drop and I was a bit more financially stable (not that you need to be stable just to buy a sports car though). The two cars that I was really looking at might've looked more sporty, but in the end weren't. The Cube was far more practical than a CRZ or Mazda 2 while offering on par performance.

I've always held a weird liking toward the cube. In white they look like marshmallows for one. The interior is pretty cavernous and comfy, and it truly is styled like nothing else available at the moment. A shame that they didn't catch on so well in the states.

2. I wanted a cube for the longest time. Even got to sit in it. I loved it until i really thought about it. I needed a vehicle that.could carry me and 4 other people and not seize on me on a steep hill. So i looked at the power figures and it didnt seem pretty. Plus i needed AWD for the unpredictable weather in Illinois. So the Cube was a no from me and my family. We got an X5 instead with the V8

Great write up. I miss my Blazer . It was my baby. I was doibg EVERYTHING to make it a killer offroad toy until one day a radiator hose blew and (after a bunch of cooling system issues) it overheated and hydrolocked. Spent two months trying to rebuild the engine until i finally knew ot was time to sell it. Im still heartbroken. It was the zr2 model and ive never seen any other ones here in miami. Turned heads everywhere. Now im in an 04 xb and while its a great car im still bummed about my blazer. I know that feel all to well. I cant wait to get a proper Blazer replacemwnt. Enjoy the Cube and and make it everything you wanted the old box to be.

The Japanese deserve an atta-boy. I rip on the dull, dull, dull monotony of all the Dove soap bar cars manufacturers pop for the the public. And here's Nissan with their funky Cube where on top of everything else, its styling is asymmetric . Now that's daring to think outside the box. (And end up with a cube...?) Still atta-boy material tho.

I had one and I loved it. It's a terrific city car. Not so good for long, high-speed highway drives. I only got rid of it because I took a job that had a 35 mile each-way freeway commute and in CA the general speed of traffic is 75-80 which was a little outside of the car's happy zone in bad weather. But I still miss it.

I bought a Cube for my wife several years ago and she loves the car. I like it too and it's a travesty that the car has gone unappreciated outside of Japan. It's immensely practical for it's size and it's one of the more distinctive cars on the road. The funny thing is that although it hasn't sold relatively well I'm seeing more and more of them on the road.
I'll go contrary to group think, but I like the CVT. I think it's operation is pretty novel. It's not exciting, but then most torque converter automatics aren't either. I like that Nissan didn't build in fake shift points.
If there's one thing that needs to be improved with the Cube it's the engine. It's kind of harsh and it's not economical at all for it's displacement. It could also benefit from more interesting color schemes than the usual bland selection Nissan offers for the US market.

I bought an xB the week they came out in CA. Loved it, loved it, loved it; then 10 years later thought I had outgrown it and got a new Tahoe. Within 6 months I sold the Tahoe and got a 2006 xB. If they were still making new gen1 xBs, I would have gotten one in a heartbeat.
And to me, the xB and the Cube are not comparable. They are both boxy-ish, but not similar beyond that - kinda like how everyone compared the xB to the Element. The Cube actually looks a bit more Dr. Seuss than "boxy" to me.
I kinda like the Ford Flex - I kinda see it as the xB's bigger brother, but it isn't enough true SUV for me to buy back into that vehicle size.

Because you don't mind that if you take a downhill freeway exit at speed and brake for the stoplight at the bottom, it feels like you are going to stoppie?
That was the only issue I had the few times I drove one. On city streets, it was fine, and on the freeway at freeway speeds it was fine. But that stoppie feeling killed it. We ended up buying a Soul this year and never considered the Cube just for that reason.

In a flash of common sense, I bought a maxed out 2010 Cube SL after driving a modded 1998 Eclipse GST for 12 years. Grew tired of the noise and buckboard ride. I had in mind road trips with friends as the Cube is very comfy and roomy. REALLY liked it except for lack of power. Turned and parked on a dime, great in the city. Had all the nice features like keyless entry/start, backup cam, yada yada. Kind of a retirement car, good as mileage, would had lasted forever. But fortune smiled on me so I traded it for a 2013 Lincoln MTK. Quite a leap! I would have kept the Cube as a rain car except for the insurance cost - the MKT is a bitch to park, almost need a runabout, major expedition every trip. Enjoy, man!

I agree. There must be some extremely tired hamsters under that hood, Or it just needs a tow/ push to get to highway speed!

I had a 2011 nissan cube as my first car and I really enjoyed it. I eventually traded the Cube in for a 2006 Mustang GT and now I drive a 2014 Dodge Challenger (V6) and to this day I miss the Cube. It was super spacious inside, got around any tight spot, and the best was getting in those tight parking spots. I want that car again so bad and I might consider trading in my challenger for a Cube.

I just bought a 2014 Cube that was still left on the lot as my first new car. I like that, much like your xB which I also loved, it doesn't look like everything else on the road. It has asymmetry, a unique silhouette, and is a remarkably comfortable car to just be in. While I will not be winning any kind of racing event any time soon, my family likes to take rides in it. It's a happy a little unique car and that's a lot more than the insipid hordes of hatchbacks, sport cards and sedans can say right now.

That is a fantastic reason. The right car will give you a special feeling, regardless of what it is. Keep up the good work, and I'd love to see more as you go. As a proud owner of a quirky Camry wagon, I know those feels xD

I liked these until I drove in one. My college futon has more support in turns. Being used to bucket seats, I felt like a hot dog sloshing side to side in water- made even worse from the body sway. But I'm glad you got a car you like :)

Good for you sir.
I think we don't need to buy cars to satisfy others. If you're Happy, that's it.

A few years ago, a friend of our family told us that she was working with Nissan to offload some of their old cars that didn't sell. She told us we could get a Cube for $0.25 on the dollar. I liked the look of the cube (as did I the original xB) and I started to get all excited to get one. The deal never materialized (go figure) but I've had a soft spot for them since.

I think the Cube is actually rather charming in its asymmetrical styling. I also completely see the utilitarian functionality of it and am considering one for when I graduate college....then again that new Jeep Renegade....

The Tardis part should be elaborated on more. My girlfriend has one and it's absurd the amount of stuff you can fit into it and still have room to play Wii Sports in.

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go? to tech tab for work detail

Good to see some love for the cube. I'm on my second one. Would still be driving the first (MT6) but for knee issues. Lots of room and it goes as fast as I want it to. You may not think that is enough reason to buy a car but all that keeps it from filling all my needs is the lack of power train adequate to pull a teardrop trailer.
Have enjoyed it and would buy another when this wears out but they are not importing any more as of 2015.

One of the things I loved about it was that people either loved it or hated it. I'd have people shout from the side of the road, regularly, "You're car is fucking ugly!!". Always made me laugh.
Do you just hate that the Flex is auto, or is it a bad transmission? My first car was a 69 Camaro, and my second was built 70 Camaro, and my next 2 cars after that were also manual, but by the time I got the xB, I was ready to stop shifting. Plus, there's no point in pretending the xB is a performance car that I needed to shift and have fun with. Just a car - one that I really like, but nothing I'm out to prove anything with.
